Bittergreen stood amongst his plants, many miles from the fire, reveling momentarily in their worshipful adulation and the incredible power he now derived from them. Then, "You can't just stand here, Green! You have WORK to do!" He remembered some of the results of years-ago research and set the jungle to work, ordering the plants to begin making massive, rapid modifications to their own physiology throughout the entire jungle, and then he made some some similar modifications to his own plant body. Now armed and armored, he set out towards the fire. In spite of his massive, ragged body and lumbering gait, he slipped through the impassible vegetation easily, as plants swayed aside to grant him passage through even the densest thickets.
Mr. Fire wandered through the burning jungle inferno, unerringly seeking out the hottest hot spots, basking for a short time, and then moving on. The roaring and crackling of the flames washed over and soothed him like the applause of a giant, enthusiastic audience for their favorite superstar; the tremendous heat, ubiquitous flames, and billowing surges of superheated air caressed him like a gentle lover. Around him, living things died in the conflagration; he was barely aware of it. It was the natural order of things: all living things die, and there is always unending torrent of new living replacements!
Mr. Fire was stunned to see something approaching him through the fire; something living, something as tall and massive as he was. A shaggy, plant-green humanoid, shambling inexorably forward, crashing over all the burned debris, and seemingly ignoring the roaring, scorching flames.
"YOU! Fire thing! This fire is KILLING my jungle! Stop it, NOW!" Bittergreen demanded. He wasn't actually speaking; the incredible thunderous roaring of the fire would have drowned out any actual sound. And the message he conveyed was a lot stronger than could be expressed by human language.
"Who are you?" the Flame Elemental replied. "Why do you want me to kill this fire? It will die on its own soon enough... and the plants will grow back after the fire is gone."
"If you won't stop this fire, I will kill YOU!" Bittergreen roared.
Mr. Fire was dumbfounded. Kill him? The concept was inconceivable. As long as there had been fire, there had been Mr. Fire; as long as there was fire, Mr. Fire would continue. At least, that's what he believed. "I don't start fires; I don't stop fires," he finally replied slowly.
"Then, you die!" Bittergreen screamed as he attacked!
Thousands of poison thorns blasted out from his sweeping gesture, accompanied by billowing clouds of poison spores - which instantly flashed into an explosion. This rocked both combatants but harmed neither, and the thorns were burned to ash by the aura of flame surrounding Mr. Fire, and for a few instants, Mr. Fire was surrounded by a cloud of ash, which was instantly blown away by the hurricane-force updrafts created by the fire.
Another scream, this one of wordless rage, and Bittergreen lumbered forward, moving much more quickly than one would expect from his size. And Mr. Fire was still somewhat befuddled by being attacked, and he didn't even attempt to dodge. Of course, he didn't yet believe that Bittergreen would be able to reach him - he was surrounded by an incredibly potent aura of fire and Bittergreen was a plant; he was just incinerating himself...
Except, the massive Plant Elemental smashed violently into the massive Flame Elemental and knocked him to the ground, and immediately rearranged his body so that Mr. Fire was completely covered by vegetation - bark, leaves and vines. "I've incorporated asbestos into ever cell in my body, fool! I'm now fireproof. And I have other weapons. I am smothering you in carbon dioxide emitted by my plant body!"
(Yes, while plants are famous for emitting oxygen, they also emit carbon dioxide. Bittergreen is using his elemental powers to enhance that capability to super levels.)
Mr. Fire was wrapped in darkness, wrapped in stuff he couldn't burn, and as his metabolism was based on fire, the blank of carbon dioxide was killing him! And he had no idea how to escape; all his struggles did was make him weaker! In his desperation, he remembered his protegee - if only she could help him!
"WILDFIRE, COME TO ME IN ALL YOUR POWER!" he put as much power as he had left into the command.
Carol <Martin, unless she has been married> was awakened by a strange sensation, and when she opened her eyes, she saw a candle in her bedroom flare suddenly into flame, and then she screamed as her body deformed and stretched toward the flame, and then her hand disappeared, and before she react further, she vanished from her bedroom and reappeared instantly in a forest fire! Adrenaline surged through her and she was fully awake and she heard a voice in her head, pleading with her to rescue the supplicant. She recognized the dry, raspy voice instantly, even though she hadn't heard it since she was three - it was Mr. Fire! She was instantly aware of his dire situation, wrapped in an fireproof trap under that pile that was impossibly leafy green, when every other remnant of vegetation was charred black or powder on the ground, lit with brillliant yellow, orange and red flames. And he was being smothered to death!
Carol raced to the impossible heap and began tearing it apart, frantically exerting all her flame-powered super strength! She realized vaguely that she had never felt so strong; she was tearing thick vines easily and breaking thick branches like twigs!
Mr. Fire had never faced death before, and he was terrified. He was straining to use his powers to burn free, desperately exerting his will to produce flames more powerful than he ever had before - and suddenly Carol ripped away a layer of the fireproof asbestos-enhanced vegetation that was smothering him, and he was exposed to air with oxygen in it, and he EXPLODED!
Carol was thrown high into the air, but the heat of the explosion couldn't harm her, and she drew healing power from the intense flames engulfing her and the remnants of the forest and within seconds she had recovered. And again, she was surprised at the strength of her powers. She gained control of her flight and circled back to the site of the explosion. There was a massive crater, debris was still raining down, there was no sign of the heap of green, and Mr. Fire was standing in the center of the devastation, laughing!
He saw her approaching and gestured... and again her body elongated, and she was drawn into a flame - and an instant later, she was back in her bedroom!
manufacturing carbon dioxide and drawing silicates and particularly asbestos from the ground and to start channeling as much water as every plant could spare towards the plants near the front. He made other botanical preparations as he thought of them, and then turned his attention to the physical.
He could sense that there wasn't a lot of dead vegetation in this jungle yet; he ordered the living to start shifting it away from the fire front. Near that front, plants started moving in unnatural ways; ripping up their roots and pushing back from the fire, as Bittergreen ordered them to create a natural firebreak. Plants, even those plants under the control of a powerful Plant Elemental, are not capable of moving quickly in human terms (although these were moving at incredible super speed in plant terms!) so it might take some hours before a wide enough swath of land was cleared. The fact that the roots were sunk through the granular sand of the former Death Valley Desert rather than densely packed soil helped! Vegetation on the other side of the future firebreak was sacrificed, and dutifully moved toward the flames and imminent consumption.
While all these changes were going on, Bittergreen was also making changes to his body; in particular, armoring it with asbestos - lucky this area was a natural supply of the stuff! When he'd finished preparing himself and the jungle as well as possible to resist fire, he moved through the jungle towards the fire front to see if there was anything he could do to help.
He couldn't change the natural order, and if he _were_ to save any of these things from death, why, they would still die anyway, wouldn't they? And, what better way to go than to feed the glorious flames? Occasionally in his virtually infinite lifespan he had been charmed by a human who was fascinated by, rather than terrified by conflagration, and had amused himself by granting those humans powers similar to his own - but in they end, they died too, didn't they? To him, any living thing was like a flame - it came into existence, flickered, and vanished. The time scale was slightly different; most living things lived longer than most flames, but what is a few fleeting years to an almost-immortal Elemental?
So he was basking, and totally stunned and dumbfounded to see another being stalking through the flames toward him!
So, Bittergreen causes the plants to mutate and start giving off carbon dioxide instead of oxygen. He tells them to armor themselves with asbestos, which is found naturally in Death Valley. Mr. Fire doesn't really care that the plants in Death Valley Jungle are becoming armored against fire, and has never cared when humans put out fires - there are always more things to burn and there will always be more fires. But Bittergreen attacks anyway. And Fire has never been attacked by anything before, so he is totally unprepared to defend himself. So he is quickly overwhelmed, and has to call Wildfire for help, and restores her youth. Wildfire quickly battles Bittergreen to a standstill, then Fire recovers and incinerates him. Wildfire is unhappy; Fire sends her home.
