Look What I Found!
"I can't believe this place!" Joe swept his head around in amazed astonishment, taking in every inch of the opulently decorated room in front of him. "It's even swankier than the Bordeaux Lounge in Freshport - but there ain't nobody here. Nobdoy's even been in the building for years!"
"What really creeps me out is how the lights just come on when we snuck in, and how the place is spic and span, even though the rest of the building is a foot deep in dust," Harry replied nervously. "Maybe alla dem stories 'bout this place being onea Capone's speakeasies - and his ghost still hangin' out here - are real..."
"C'mon, ya sissy, ya don't believe in ghosts, do ya?" Joe tried to laugh at his friend's fears, but it came out as more of a nervous giggle. Which only made them both more nervous. "Hot Damn! Just lookit all that booze!" He pointed, past the stage and the grand piano, to the amazing bar, decorated in gold gild and stocked with literally hundreds of bottles. Even from here, he could recognize some of the labels - the most expensive brands he'd ever tasted, care of several prior liquor store robberies. "This place is paradise, not haunted!"
A door behind them pushed open; Joe screamed and both young men leaped straight and high into the air, and then twisted to see what had made the noise. Harry tried to pull his gun , but that put him off balance and he fell to floor when he landed. A young man, carrying the largest, strangest looking pistol the two had ever seen pushed through the door; Joe could see a stairway behind, heading down to a lower floor.
"Hey, fellows," Willie laughed at his almost panicked friends. He waved his pistol; it had a barrel almost the size of his forearm and looked like something out of a Flash Rodgers serial. "You oughta see what's in the basement of this place!"

Margo the Magician
"When we discovered that the drawers for EVERY teller were short, I opened the vault," Demeon Mills, the bank manager, continued his story, mumbling and sweating in near panic. "We thought maybe... well, I don't know what we thought - nobody was thinking very well just then. And we discovered we were missing another hundred thousand from the vault, on top of the twenty five hundred from the drawers. If the drawers hadn't been short, we might not even have discovered the theft until tomorrow!"
"And nobody remembers anything?" FBI Detective Van Dunn asked in disbelief, looking up from his notebook. "You're all saying somebody walked into the bank, stole money from every drawer, somehow just opened the vault, and walked out with over a hundred grand, and either nobody SAW it, or nobody remembers it?! I don't believe it. You were the only one in the building who knows the combination of the vault. I think you stole the money and all the other employees are in on it and covering for you!"
Over the past ninety minutes, Van Dunn and a team of Freshport police officers had been questioning 10 bank employees and half a dozen customers of the Inland Seas Bank and Trust, on Bastion Blvd., about the massive robbery the bank had reported today. To the discomfort of the city cops, Van Dunn was aggressively taking the lead in the questioning, and he made it clear to everyone that he didn't believe anyone.
Yet their stories were all consistent... Today had been an absolutely normal day... until quitting time, when the tellers had begun counting out their drawers - and had discovered that every drawer was short, often hundreds of dollars short. And then, Mills had opened the vault and they'd discovered that the vault was short, too - over a hundred thousand dollars short!
A tall, athletically built woman, with shoulder length black hair, wearing a sleeveless ankle-length blue dress with a revealing keyhole cutout at the neck, a wide green cinch belt, and a dark gray narrow floor-length cape, had been sitting next to the interrogators, intently studying each person as they told their stories. This was the famous adventure heroine Margo the Magician, currently the leader of the Freshport-based Equity Concord of America.
"Detective?" Margo interrupted softly. "I've been scanning their minds as we talked to them, and they are all telling the truth... as they remember it. They don't remember anything unusual happening today - at least consciously. But it's pretty clear to me - somebody has tampered with their memories. Let me show you who I think it was." She looked around, made sure she had the attention of the cops and the manager, and then made an 'introducing' gesture with her hand. A man-sized cylinder of air seemed to fill with mist which then shrank and became more colorful, finally solidifying into the perfect three-dimensional figure of a man. A perfectly normal, very average looking man, wearing a loud, cheap suit, what looked like an operating room mask, and carrying a sci-fi movie ray gun pistol.
"Gargle..." the bank manager choked out. His face twisted in pain and then he collapsed to the floor, unconscious. At the same instant, Margo let out a sharp bark of her own pain, and the illusion vanished.
Margo slipped to her knees on the floor next to the unconscious man, leaning heavily on her chair to keep from collapsing on top of him. "A post-hypnotic trap in his mind. I kept it from killing him, but it almost got me..." she gasped as she slumped into a sitting position. "We'll both be ok in a while..." Van Dunn offered her his hand, and she pulled herself back into a sitting position while a couple of cops carefully moved the manager to a sofa in the waiting room. Her voice was stronger, but still strained, and she continued, "Now that I'm aware of the post-hypnotic booby trap, I can remove it from the minds of the rest of them. But I better not show anyone that image again until I'm finished."
"When you do, we'll get a picture and get a manhunt started," Van Dunn suggested.
Several of the cops sniggered. "Guess you're new in town, huh?" the lead police detective asked him. "Her powers don't work that way..." He turned to Margo. "If you can stop by downtown before you call it a day, ma'am, I'll tell them to have the artist available - and we'll have the picture out to every police office in the state by midnight."

The Chimney Sweep
"Black Ash and Cinders! What the heck was THAT?!?!" In his office at the Wabash Institute of Technology, Professor of Mathematics Bert Dawes jumped to his feet, upsetting his desk chair and knocking a half dozen advanced theoretical math textbooks off his desk to the floor. "Someone is tampering with the stochastic field!"
Bert Dawes was the civilian identity of the legacy super hero known as the Chimney Sweep, a heroic legacy which extended back in his family for 6 generations. Bert was a tall, lanky man with medium-length dark hair and a long expressive face that was usually creased in a cheerful smile.
What should the costume of the Chimney Sweep look like? Here's what I know about him...
in the late 1700s, an Irish chimney sweep saved a leprechaun's life and home from a fire, and the grateful leprechaun gifted his friend with a magic chimney brush. That sweep became the local hero known as the Chimney Sweep, and he passed the magic brush on to son who adopted the Chimney Sweep identity. The Sweep only worked locally and never really did anything spectacular that brought the attention of the world. Eventually he passed the magic brush to his son, and then to his son. At one point the Sweep and family moved to London and his feats became more noticed and his fame grew, but he still only did small things and really avoided widespread fame. In the 40s, the current sweep started expanding his scope and began fighting Nazis- and this expanded his enemy pool, and one of his Nazi enemies killed him. His widow refused to let her son take up his father's legacy identity, and she moved the family to the US. She left the magic chimney brush behind. But... the brush IS magic, and a few years later, her son found it, in Chicago, and decided to carry on the family legacy. But his heroic identity doesn't look at all as the name suggests, he considered other names but decided to honor his father.
A number of weird things happened throughout the city that day. At a big horse track, the lead horse stumbled and fell, and the pack was disrupted, and only one horse finished. It was a horrendous tragedy, as a number of the horses had to be put down and a half dozen jockeys ended up in the hospital. But one bettor walked away with thousands of dollars. A greyhound race was interrupted by a similar incident, though none of the dogs were seriously injured. And again, one bettor won it all. A golfer in the big tournament missed a 6 inch putt, Maxxie Minosa dropped an easy popup. And several bookies paid a LOT of money covering bets affected by those events.
