Times Past Tale
Chapter 1
In the brightly-lit receiving room of their prestigious private museum, Westchester Hall of Legacy, Carter and Shiera Hall were intently focused on their work. With careful precision, they meticulously catalogued each newly arrived artifact from a Native American nation, ensuring that every item was accurately recorded for its eventual return to its rightful owners after their current exhibit.
As they worked, an air of ominous foreboding began to permeate the dry, dusty atmosphere of the room. A chill ran down their spines as they shared a mutual sense of dread, a premonition brought on by some mystical force. It felt as though this warning was being transmitted through the very object that had once been used to assassinate Chay-Ara, an incarnation of Shiera in ancient Egypt - the crystal dagger.
The couple hurried to the museum's vault where precious and dangerous artifacts were kept. They studied the crystal dagger intently, straining both their human and mystical senses for any clues about the impending danger. But beyond the overwhelming feeling of doom, they couldn't find any further information. Carter suggested seeking assistance from Dr. Fate, but before they could act on it, a powerful presence interrupted them.
In an instant, something or someone materialized in the vault with them.
Without hesitation, Carter reached for two medieval weapons from the rack - tossing a heavy mace to Shiera while he swung his flail's deadly chain and ball. The two warriors stood ready to defend themselves against whatever had joined them in the vault.
Chapter 2
Sitting in his library in his mystical tower in Salem, Ma, deep in meditation, surrounded by shelves and shelves of thick, ancient leather-bound tomes, Dr. Fate is stirred by a premonition. He felt a great threat looming over Order, its dark tendrils extending towards him and those closest to him. He moves from the library to his Scrying Room and gazed into the Orb of Nabu, a crystal ball that can peer through time and space. But the Orb is clouded; some mystical presence that he has never sensed before is blocking his spells and his perception. He senses that Carter and Shiera Hall are also somehow touched by this impending doom, so he swirls the Cloak of Destiny, chants a quick spell "By the power of the Cloak of Destiny, transport me instantly into the presence of Carter and Shiera Hall."
Chapter 3
The Lord of Order Dr. Fate, materialized in the vault with Carter and Shiera. They discussed the premonition, and Fate attempted to learn more by casting spells on the crystal dagger, but it resisted his efforts. Channeling his spiritual energy, he summoned the Orb of Nabu from his sanctum - the Tower of Fate in Salem, Massachusetts. Together, the 3 peered into the Orb, searching for the source of the ominous warning radiating from the crystal.
Although Dr. Fate's powers alone were not enough to penetrate through whatever magical barrier was shielding the truth, the combined strength of Carter and Shierra - who had both been reincarnated numerous times - added to Fate's own power proved sufficient. Slowly but surely, the dark clouds within the crystal parted to reveal an even darker danger lurking beneath. Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who shared his connection to ancient Egypt, could feel it too - uneasy chills spreading through their bodies like an icy wind. Visions flooded their minds - images of ancient Egypt, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and a looming threat to Order. A dark figure shrouded in chaotic energy, its very presence threatening to disrupt the balance between Order and Chaos. Something whispered a chill word to the heroes... a word neither Carter or Shiera had ever heard before, but a name that still made their blood run cold, a word that raised specters of destruction and chaos in their minds... Malignon. A name that Dr. Fate instantly recognized, to his dismay...
But as Dr. Fate delved deeper into the visions, he sensed that Malignon was not the true source of the threat. There was something else at play here, something even more sinister and powerful than he could have imagined. And with this realization, the weight of responsibility settled heavy on his shoulders - for it was now up to him and his allies to uncover the truth and protect the world from this impending danger.
Chapter 4
"Who is Malignon?" the Halls asked anxiously. Dr. Fate began a tale of triumph and woe.
"Long before the great Big Bang, there was chaos in the air... Long before the sands of time, there was chaos... everywhere!"
"Hey, Doc, that was pretty catchy!" Carter noted, snapping his fingers to the rhythm. "You outta cut a record..."
"Cut it out, Carter! This is serious business!" Shiera slapped him gently. Dr. Fate nodded his thanks, then gravely continued his story.
"Malignon was one of the eldest and most powerful of the ancient Lords of Chaos. Whispers spread that he had outlived the previous universal cycle and survived the Big Bang. Some were even convinced that he was the architect of the Big Crunch that destroyed the previous universe."
He shuddered and continued: "As a new Lord of Order, driven by a lethal combination of ignorance, naivety, pride, and sense of duty, I took on the task of trying to minimize Malignon's chaos in this new universe - though none could defeat him, such was his immense power. For countless ages, we battled each other. Most times, he emerged victorious as he was in the fullness of his strength while I still had much to learn. Yet, I remained steadfast in my mission and did manage to limit his successes." There was a hint of pride in his voice at the valiant and steadfast efforts of the young Lord of Order.
"Eventually, it was inevitable that I would suffer a devastating defeat. The other Lords of Order met to decide my fate. Powerful divination spells were cast and each one pointed to Earth as my destiny. I was exiled to Earth - forced to remain there - and expected to hone my skills and increase my power in preparation for my final showdown with Malignon. If I emerged victorious, I would once again be free to shape my own destiny in the universe."
"So, the threat is Malignon?" Shiera was intensely interested in 'the rest of the story'.
"I'm... not sure. We had one further confrontation,” Nabu replied somberly. “Malignon was severely weakened by the forces of Order during the so-called 'Moderate Destruction' 100,000 years ago when Chaos and Order clashed, although his alliance of Lords of Chaos successfully destroyed the Galactic Patrol. He sought me out on Earth, likely assuming that I would be an easy target. We engaged in a fierce battle - and just when I thought I had emerged victorious, he suddenly disappeared. I have no clue where he went - if my final spell obliterated him, or if he traveled back in time to escape defeat, or possibly slipped into a different universe. He simply vanished."
Chapter 5
Wotan has been pondering his latest defeat and has decided he is tired of it. He’s tired of being a second class villain, and he decides that he would like to augment his natural abilities. Using every bit of his sorcerous skill, he prepares a powerful augury spell to locate magical artifacts on Earth that he can acquire. It takes him several days to assemble the elements he needs for this spell, and during this time, as he brings the components together, a magical aura is forming, and it is this aura that Fate and the Hawks have detected.
Finally he detects a faint trace of power in Egypt - and immediately departs for Egypt!
Wotan has been busy. He has been cataloging items of power on Earth 2 for some time, and is just about to begin his quest to collect them. He has attempted to claim the prerogatives of a Lord of Chaos before, and been casually slapped down, and he is not about to be casually dismissed again. He is contemplating his revenge when suddenly he becomes aware of something he has never noticed before - a pinpoint of power in Egypt. His investigation suggests that this power has been concealed for a long time, and whatever force was concealing it has weakened over time and finally let a whisper sneak out. He immediately puts his plans on hold and pops over to Egypt to investigate.
Chapter 6
This battle should highlight: Hawkman as a strategist and leader, Hawkgirl as a brave warrior, their use of the language of Hawks to communicate so that Wotan doesn't understand them, and the use of medieval weapons, and the magic-shielding effects of Nth metal, as well as Dr. Fate using the Amulet and calling on several different Egyptian gods and goddesses. It should also include dialog from Wotan which is drawn from his past encounters with Dr. Fate.
The ancient ruins of Giza echoed with the sounds of a fierce battle. The clash of fists and metal and the crackle of powerful spells filled the air as Dr. Fate, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl fought against their formidable opponent - Wotan. His dark robes billowed around him as he conjured up blasts of energy and summoned creatures from other realms to aid in his fight.
Despite their combined efforts, Wotan continued to resist their attacks with sheer strength and magic prowess. However, the trio sensed a slight weakening in his powers and pressed on even harder. In a desperate attack, Wotan summoned a tornado that caught up the three of them. As Hawkman and Hawkgirl struggled to escape the swirling winds, Dr. Fate snuffed the raging vortex like a candle with a spell that cancelled magic.
Wotan fell to the sands, apparently beaten. The trio circled their foe cautiously, preparing for any traps or tricks he may have up his sleeve. At the same instant, Dr. Fate's mystical senses detected a disturbance in the magical energies around them. The magical spell that had cancelled the magic of the tornado had also cancelled another spell - one that had been cast ages before to hide the presence of Malignon's resting place from the universe.
Wotan also noted the disturbance and quickly realized what it had concealed. The Amulet of Malignon, containing the essence of the fallen Lord of Chaos, an artifact that would temper his lust for power. He summoned every last wisp of his magical powers to cast a forbidden, long-forgotten spell that unleashed an inferno of hellfire that engulfed Hawkman and Hawkgirl. In the midst of this chaos, Nabu's voice spoke sternly inside Dr. Fate's helmet - "Do not waste the time to rescue them! Wotan will recover the Amulet of Malignon and gain the chaotic power he craves, and become an enemy even more terrible!"
But Dr. Fate refused to abandon his comrades. "They are my friends! Some things are more urgent than the immediate defense of Order!"
Ignoring Wotan for a few seconds, Dr. Fate cast a tremendously powerful spell that not only saved his friends from certain doom but also repaired the horrific damage done to them by Wotan's flames. However, as he did so, Wotan seized the opportunity to snatch the Amulet of Malignon and taunt the trio with his impending victory.
"Farewell, losers! I go to consolidate my power, but I shall return and destroy you and this Earth you defend in the cause of Chaos! Bwa ha ha ha ha!"
Defiantly, Hawkgirl made a solemn vow: "And we'll be here to stop you - as we always have and always will!" A sentiment shared by her allies. For they knew that no matter how many times their enemy may return, they would always be there to protect the Earth against the forces of chaos.
Epilogue
Meanwhile, Dr. Fate stands tall and resolute, defending his actions against the stern admonitions of Nabu.
"The cause of Order demanded that I prevent Wotan from obtaining the artifact!" Nabu insists, his voice ringing with authority and conviction.
"But at what cost? There is nothing more valuable in the universe than life!" Dr. Fate declares passionately, a fierce determination shining in his eyes.
Nabu remains steadfast. "It falls on you to bear the responsibility of your actions," he says peevishly. "Your intervention has allowed Wotan to become a new Lord of Chaos."
"Perhaps so," Dr. Fate concedes, "but my actions have also preserved the lives of two mighty champions of Justice." He stands taller, his cape billowing behind him as he proclaims boldly, "And we will continue to stand against the chaos that threatens our world."
Prologue
Over 100,000 years ago, a coalition of Lords of Chaos including Burr, Malignon, Infi, Zanadu, and Pandemma, destroyed the great peace keeping organization of the Galactic Patrol, a creation of a young Lord of Order named Marnu. This brought about the collapse of a great interstellar civilization that had arisen over the prior millennia, bringing to the Galaxy a period of Chaos from which the forces of Order are still recovering. This collapse is known among the Lords of Chaos as the 'the Moderate Destruction' as none of them is willing to admit that it was greater than any similar destruction one of them had engineered in earlier eras.
Malignon, one of the Lords of Chaos responsible for the destruction of the Galactic Patrol, mysteriously vanished after the Great Destruction. This event was not newsworthy to the other Lords of Chaos, as they were accustomed to such disappearances and viewed chaos as just a normal part of their existence.
In fact, many of them saw Malignon's absence as an opportunity to expand their own power and influence. Burr, one of the most influential Lords of Chaos, took advantage of this moment and greatly extended his own power.
But for most Lords of Chaos, these events were insignificant. They continued to spread chaos throughout the Galaxy without any regard for its consequences or those who tried to oppose them.
And so it goes in our universe – a never-ending battle between Order and Chaos, with no end in sight.
About a tiak (Note: "tiak" refers to an interval of 100,000 years - minuscule compared to the immortal lifespans of the Lords of Chaos) after the Moderate Destruction, on Earth, a planet where Order was gaining ground, The curiosity of Wotan, an immortal sorcerer who had been an enemy of Nabu since time immemorial was piqued by the mysterious disappearance of Malignon. To him, there was always potential for power in the aftermath when one of the most powerful beings suddenly vanished. And Wotan desired this power for himself.
Wotan's discovery that Malignon had vanished after engaging Nabu, had only fed the voracious hunger for power burning in his veins. The spirit of Nabu had been bound to Earth for millions of years, and had chosen present-day Earth to remain as his home and the seat of his power as currently embodied in the person of Dr. Fate; might traces of Malignon still linger on Earth? For Wotan, nothing would stand in the way of gaining dominion over all realms, not even the formidable Lord of Order Nabu. His thirst for power grew more insatiable and he would stop at nothing to achieve his twisted desires.
