"Wayfarer"
Darryl Hunter was injured when a flying saucer was hit by cannon fire during a blackout on the US East Coast. The saucer crashed into the observatory where Darryl was working, and falling debris knocked Darryl down and broke several of his bones.
When he awakened, he saw an alien being carefully examining the damage. When the being saw Darryl, he aimed a hand-held device at him and Darryl was blanketed by a green beam. He passed out. When he awakened, he was healed.
Not long afterward, Darryl discovered that the green beam had not only healed him, but given him a super power - the ability to travel to wherever he can see with a single step. Darryl discovered his ability while in the lab. He was going across the room to check something and when he took the first step, he was suddenly at his destination. He began experimenting, using line of sight first, then trying it with binoculars.
After he revealed his new ability to his friend, Ned Quest, Ned revealed to Darryl that he was the mystery hero Dr. Lambda, and Darryl decided he wanted to be a mystery hero as well. Ned created a suit for him made of an experimental adaptive material that protects him regardless of what type of environment he finds himself in. He also created a special helmet that automatically seals and provides fresh oxygen when none is available. The goggles of the helmet offer a clearer image of his destination and has incredible magnification capabilities. By using a telescope, as long as he has a clear place to step, he can travel there. Since it is just like walking, he cannot appear inside anything accidentally.
This would allow him to conceivably travel to the moon and beyond, although so far he has not tried to go anywhere other than on the surface of Earth. He has not yet tested his ability to see if he can carry others with him.
There are some potentially deadly drawbacks to his ability. He has to actually take a step, whether running or walking, to go from one place to the other. If he falls or jumps off of a cliff, for example, he is out of luck if he decides to use his powers. He must push off from something to activate them. Now, if he looks over the ledge and sees his destination and then steps off, he will be fine, but to blindly jump... not a good idea.
